This'll be stuck in my head
Alright yeah, I’ll cut it out with the song posting. I’ve just been the mood of throwing up onto tumblr what was in my head.  This morning, this tune was in my head and after my shower I had to take a listen. I figured to make this a little more interesting than just text I shall share the actual song. So here ya go: A Fine Frenzy (yeah, I posted about this album earlier)  Play Song...

Let's Get Physical - Sophie Ellis Bextor
Oh hai. ————  I’m saying all the things that I know you’ll like Making good conversation I gotta handle you just right You know what I mean I took you to an intimate restaurant Then to a suggestive movie There’s nothing left to talk about Unless it’s horizontally Let’s get physical, physical I wanna get physical Let’s get into physical...

There was a pretty bad snow storm in Grand Rapids, MI when I left and drove two hours home. I was stupid enough to take out my camera and start shooting while trying to drive 50 miles an hour in a whiteout…. you better enjoy… but I won’t hate you if you don’t. :)

Conversation with brother
Ryan: so have you wised up and decided to study computer science yet?
Rob: haha no. It just doesn't interest me much
Rob: I spend time on the computer, but I don't want to write algorithms
Ryan: why not?
Rob: I don't know... boring?
Ryan: really?
Rob: Not that i've done it a lot, but it's just not my sort of thinking... i think i'm more on the language side of things
Ryan: comp sci is language though
Ryan: you're telling something what to do in a different language
Ryan: :)
Rob: yeah.... i know that haha
Ryan: so..
Rob: still not the same
Rob: i'm interested in human languages
Rob: more communicative i guess
Ryan: hmmm.. man we could argue about this
Ryan: these are the new languages!
Ryan: yoiu don't have to write object oriented code all day but you could study humanistic computing, user interface etc.
Rob: well I know what you mean, how they are both forms of communication, but what interests me is seeing a spanish word for example and the connections it makes with other languages.... or writing
Ryan: if i could go back, that would be my thang
Rob: humanistic computing?
Ryan: ahh.. so will you do linguistics?
Rob: Linguistics sounds like it could be interesting, although I don't know what it's really like
Ryan: so find out
Rob: Designing a user interface would be cool
Ryan: ya
Ryan: just prodding you a bit
Rob: they don't teach that any way here though
Ryan: mom told me you're just studying spanish
Ryan: could have just gone to mexico for that
Ryan: :)
Rob: i mean, my friend MIke majored in computer science because he wanted to learn coding languages, he wants to code
Rob: he says they teach IS majors more languages than him
Rob: he does Calc and stuff, but anyway, beside the point... I don't think i'd get "user interface design" out of college
Ryan: absolutely
Ryan: it's a masters
Rob: Yeah, you could learn things in different ways, but america just accepts degrees
Rob: mostly
Ryan: SEM/SEo, user architecture, web development, design etc etc.
Ryan: hundreds of careers in the field besides coding java
Rob: Yeah, I guess it's hard to look at a college guide book and pick what you want to do for several years based on the bold headings.
Rob: i'm doing spanish because i think i'm good at it and it's interesting
Rob: and i think it'd be fun to teach
Rob: but of course that doesn't have much financial benifit so mom's not happy with that
Rob: wants me to be a doctor, but i said no way to that, wants me to be a lawyer and i said maybe to that
Rob: I think it would be pretty interesting in some ways, but again, I have no experience with it so I dunno
Ryan: well, i could care less as long as you're really challenging yourself
Ryan: if not, you're selling yourself short
Ryan: can you tell i talked to mom?
Rob: mom told me that she called you
Ryan: nothing wrong with spanish but it's just a language
Ryan: you need tofigure out what impact you want to have on the world
Ryan: if you can do that with speaking a language or teaching, then do it
Ryan: who cares what anyone says
Rob: How are you making your impact on the world
Ryan: but you might end up as head of foreign language program at some great uni and love it
Rob: it seems almost incidental where you ended up. you didn't pick some course path at college and just do that
Rob: at least, that's what mom wants me to do... only pick the 'right' one
Ryan: that's bad advice
Ryan: well..
Ryan: here's the deal.. i thought i would be a rock star or a painter or an actor
Ryan: mom and dad discouraged all of that stuff and i never really put enough effort into anything to get to the next level
Ryan: i did drop outto make techno but went back to study film and felt pressure to work
Ryan: so now i'm still young enough to do music, maybe start studying acting soon, and blah blah..
Ryan: but also, i'm more aggresive than you are
Ryan: which is not a fault
Ryan: i have a knack for business, technology etc. and am fiercly competitive
Ryan: so it's the traits that got me here, not reading about something
Ryan: so what are your traits and where is your passion?
Ryan:
Rob: I've always looked around me and reduced any dream to mediocraty... for example, mom says study law, I assume I'll end up as one of those guys I see about a speeding ticket.. or if I worked my ass off at math and did astrophysics as i was interested in it in 9th grade, i would just be doin some minor research and not finding anything cool
Rob: so I suppose my approach has been to look at all those normal jobs, and see teaching as the most enjoyable
Rob: at least if i go and aim for that, i would be headed where i expect
Ryan: well, i think, and don't take this the wrong way, but you are way to smart to be this lazy
Ryan: and so defeatist
Ryan: i have that too
Ryan: it's cause we grew up fortunate
Rob: Yeah, I am very defeatist. I have such a negative view of the world
Rob: Yeah, I am very defeatist. I have such a negative view of the world
Ryan: hold
Rob: Sometimes I do recognize that I am smart. I mean, I don't really study much and I have about a 3.7 GPA, so I almost annecdotally say "wow imagine if I tried hard..." but I can't think of anything that is just "wow that's amazing and also accesible/possible"
Rob: This is a good conversation, but mom said that I should get going by 4 because of a snow storm coming. I have to drive back home for an allergy shot.

Nous commençons le français demain
We begin the French tomorrow! ~ I confess I used some translation there. Anyway, I have decided over this winter break that I would and should learn some French. I throw in that word “some” because I have doubts about ever becoming fluent (over eight years studying Spanish and I’m only somewhat fluent myself). I am hoping that I can drag someone else into this personal project as...
