About

Some personal information, because we LOVE giving that out on the internet these days.

Oh snap. I have to summarize “who I am” in a little web page? Too much of a task, and words will not tell you what you need to know. To satisfy the common curiosities though, I can note some points, dates, places, etc.

Names:

  • Rob - to most everyone
  • Robert - on any serious kind of application or paperwork
  • Robby - to my friends that grew up with me in elementary school, my bff Allie, and for some reason Karishma
  • Roberto - to any friends from a Spanish class
  • Berto - to a special girl
  • Brogan - to my roommate, Jenn. I don’t know how that one happened. I’ve never been a “last name kid” before.
  • Bobbert - to my dad. God I hate that one.

Places:

  • DeSoto, Texas - Born in 1986 to 1992
  • (east side) Michigan - Second grade ‘92 to HS graduation in 2005
  • (west side) Michigan - college years from 2005 to 2009
    • Heredia, Costa Rica - two months in the summer of ‘08
  • Barcelona, Spain - 2009 - 2010
  • (east side) Michigan – 2010 - 2011
  • (Williamsburg) New York - 2011 to current

Miscellaneous stuff important to me:

  • Piano lessons from age 10 to 18, and I only stopped because I had to move to college. I still play when I’m visiting home. My favorite is Chopin, and I also loved learning Bach pieces as well. I would have liked to, but found it very difficult to move into Jazz styles.
  • I worked as a camp counselor at Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp for two different summers and both of them were the best work/life experiences ever. It is a bubble of happiness and amazing people. I am sad that I won’t be doing it again this year. I’ve never had such meaningful interchanges with human beings. It was so safe to be completely honest with very new people and you skip the acquaintance part of meeting them and jump straight to super-close friends.

Educational times (and the life in between):

  • Preschool - My aunt was the director of the school I went to. I stapled my thumb in her office once. Ouch!
  • Elementary school - The only time I ever picked on someone. Surprising since I was always such a quiet and gentle kid.
  • Middle school - fuck yeah pokémon! I read A Brief History of Time and thought I’d grow up to be an astrophysicist and study with Stephen Hawking. Oh, to be young.
  • High school - I refused to fit into any social group and ended up with a gang of dorky theatre girly friends. I was the first with a license and car, became their chauffeur. Got mediocre grades in AP Physics, never mind Stephen Hawking. Wanted to be a high school teacher. Started a relationship with an *amazing* girl in my mind at the time…
  • College - Continued with what I was always best at in high school: Spanish and sex with my girlfriend. Broke up with said gf (cheated on me), dated another, got broken up with, had a thing for an impossible girl, etc. Discovered the fascinating world of philosophy and language mixed with the science of psychology.
  • Got my Spanish degree and decided not to go through with training to be a high school teacher, moved to Spain for some life experience… and now I’m aimed toward graduate studies.

Food:

  • I used to hate a lot of green things.
  • Then I learned to eat some veggies. Except avocado. That shit was slimy and nasty looking. Oh man how I love avocado now!
  • I used to hate rubbery things like mushrooms or squid. Now I love all kinds, except scallops. Still don’t like those >.<
  • I remember being terrified of sushi. As though to eat uncooked fish would poison me to death. Obviously I now know like most people that sushi is amazing, and beyond that, I’m noticing that in “fancy” food you end up eating just about anything nearly uncooked. They serve stake “rare” don’t they?

Music

Almost forgot about this one!

  • Well, I listen to a lot more “classical” music that most people I meet. I put classical in quotes because I refer to the popular genre of orchestral or solo music that is known by the genres of baroque, classical, romantic, and then blossoming into loads of other specificities.
  • Glenn Gould is my piano man
  • I also like music of my parents’ era… ie, the stones, cat stevens, and other cool cats like that.
  • There’s really so much, I’d rather you just look at my last.fm since it’s been keeping tabs on me for the last 5+ years I think.

Books:

I’ve read a lot. I won’t type them all here, but I’ll try to keep track on goodreads.

Okay, this already seems like way too much. Ask me about what I didn’t say!
